Know the Warning Signs

Your Deck and Fence Are Trying to Tell You Something

Soft boards, wobbly rails and leaning posts do not fix themselves. Pick a sign to see what it may mean and what to do.

A carpenter replaces a rotted board on an aging wooden deck with a few boards pulled up exposing the joists, a pry bar and tools

Soft, Spongy or Rotted Boards

Boards that flex, crumble when poked or have dark, soft spots are a sign that water has been sitting on the wood.

It may be

  • Water trapped between boards and joists
  • Old or failed finish
  • Poor drainage under the deck

What to do

  • Stay off any section that feels soft, and have the framing checked before replacing boards. A good inspection tells you whether to repair, resurface or rebuild.

A Wobbly Railing or Stair

A railing that moves when you lean on it, or a stair with loose treads, is a safety problem that should not wait.

It may be

  • Loose or rotted posts
  • Failing fasteners and connections
  • Railings built too low or with wide gaps

What to do

  • Keep kids and guests away from the area and call us for a repair. Rails and stairs are the safety parts of a deck.

A worker straightens a leaning fence section and replaces a broken post and pickets with a drill and level

A Leaning or Sagging Fence

A fence that leans, bows or has sections pulling away from the posts usually has a post or footing problem.

It may be

  • Rotted or broken posts
  • Footings that were too shallow
  • Wind, wet soil or tree damage

What to do

  • Resetting or replacing the failing posts can save the rest of the fence. We tell you honestly whether a repair makes sense.

A worker applies honey-colored stain to a wood deck, half freshly stained and glossy and half still weathered gray

Gray, Peeling or Faded Wood

Wood that has turned gray, is peeling or looks dry is losing its protective finish, and unprotected wood weathers faster.

It may be

  • Sun and rain wearing the finish
  • Mildew and algae growth
  • Finish that was never maintained

What to do

  • Clean it, let it dry and refinish with a stain or sealer suited to the wood. Do it before the wood starts to rot.

Double black steel driveway gates with a keypad and brick pillars with lanterns lead to a gravel driveway and a large home

A Gate That Drags or Will Not Latch

Gates carry a lot of leverage. When one drags, sags or will not latch, it usually needs a stronger post or a braced frame.

It may be

  • Posts that are too light or too shallow
  • Frames without diagonal bracing
  • Worn hinges and latches

What to do

  • A re-hung, braced gate with heavy hardware can last for years. For driveways, an opener can be added to a strong gate.

An Old Fence You Have Outgrown

Sometimes the fence just no longer fits: too low, too open, too worn out or the wrong style for your home and your pets.

It may be

  • A fence that no longer gives privacy
  • Failing posts along the whole run
  • A style that no longer suits the house

What to do

  • Replacing it lets you choose a better height, material and gate, and fix the problems at their roots.

Call 615-357-7797

What kinds of work does Music City Deck & Fence do?

We design and build custom decks, privacy and ornamental fences, gates, railings, staircases, porches, screened porches, pergolas and pavilions, and we repair, resurface, stain and replace existing decks and fences, for homes and businesses.

Do you offer free estimates?

Yes. Call 615-357-7797 or send us a message and we will set up a free estimate. We visit, measure, talk through materials and styles and give you a clear written estimate with options.

Are you licensed and insured?

Our team is licensed and insured. Ask us for details about our credentials when you call.

Can I see my deck or fence before it is built?

Yes. Our free Deck Designer and Fence Designer let you try shapes, colors, railings and styles online, and we will turn your favorite into a real plan during your estimate.

Do I need a permit for a deck or fence?

Many decks, covered structures and fences need a permit, and many neighborhoods have rules about height and materials. We help you check the requirements for your address and build to them.

Which is better, composite or wood decking?

It depends on your priorities. Composite needs far less upkeep and wood offers natural warmth at a lower price. The Deck Material Matchmaker compares them for your priorities.

Which fence is best for privacy and pets?

Solid wood, vinyl and composite privacy fences block sightlines, and tight pickets or wire-backed rails keep small pets in. The Fence Style Finder ranks styles for your priorities.

Do you build for businesses?

Yes. We build commercial fences, gates, screening, patios and decks for offices, shops, restaurants and communities.
